C. Topic: New Identity - Open Ended to Universal Question

1. Why did McCandless create a new identity?
2. Is this desire to begin again, born anew, a common trait in humanity?

  1. 1. "Driving west out of Atlanta, he intended to invent an utterly new life for himself, one in which he wuold be free to wallow in unfiltered experience...."(Krakauer, 23). This quotation is the exact answer to this question. McCnadless wanted to live free, as a person with nature as his friend, and be able to be his real self with everyone, without getting bothered by how he had to live his past the way he did not want to, and just be a new person, and start a fresh new life.

  2. 2. Normal people many times want to be someone new. Someone other than how they have been, because they want a change in their lives, and sometimes because they want to forget their past, and live as a better person and truly as themselves. However, it is not very common for anyone to actually change their identity, end their contacts with the people that they knew in the past, and completely become independent. Because no matter how they want to begin a new life, they all know that it will be extremely difficult, and no matter how unfortunate their past have been, there are at least some parts that they want to keep, so not a lot of people want complete change in their lives.
